fix(sports_rankings): skip a malformed poll entry; rank each side by its own id (#791)
* fix(sports_rankings): skip a malformed poll entry; rank each side by its own id The two review points deferred on #789 until sports_rankings was the only copy (the nine scoreboards adopted it in ledmatrix-plugins #648): - A poll entry whose "current" is None or a string raised TypeError at `current_rank <= 0`; the broad except returned {} without setting the cache timestamp, so every team lost its rank and the standings were re-fetched on every update. The entry is now skipped. - _ranked_positions() fell back to abbreviations for BOTH sides when only one side's id was unparseable, so a colliding abbreviation could rank the wrong school. It now decides id-or-abbreviation per side. Well-formed ESPN data (ids on both sides, int ranks) ranks as before. SPORTS_UNIFICATION.md: family 8 marked done and adopted. feat(common): sports_rankings -- the reconciled rankings (sports family 8) (#789)
* feat(common): sports_rankings -- the reconciled rankings family (sports family 8) New hardware-free module src/common/sports_rankings.py, copied from ledmatrix-plugins claude/family8-reconcile once the nine scoreboards made _fetch_team_rankings, _choose_poll (three bodies each), _load_division_team_ids, _passes_other_filters, _best_rank and _is_ranked_game (two each) one body each. All of them live on the plugins' SportsCore, so one mixin, SportsRankingsMixin, carries exactly those six plus _ranked_positions and _poll_season_ended and the constants they read; no manager gains a method it lacks today. - Ranks are kept by ESPN team id as well as abbreviation, and a game with ids is ranked by id (ESPN lists Ohio State and Ohio State Newark both as OSU). The badge still reads the abbreviation table. - A poll whose season's endDate has passed loads nothing, so no badge shows and the "ranked" filter fails open between seasons (ESPN served April's college basketball poll on 2026-10-12); read from the payload, no calendar, no sport names. - College football's division rosters are asked for the season year (football's July rule; only that league has rosters, so no seam). - choose_top_division_poll(): the one poll rule, for the dynamic team resolvers that expand AP_TOP_n. - test/test_sports_rankings.py: the plugins' pinned cases (poll choice, which leagues are asked, payload shapes, hourly cache, the finished-season rows, the rosters' season year and caching, ranked/best rank/filter over colliding abbreviations), plus the host contract. Mutation-checked. - test/test_sports_rankings_parity.py: with LEDMATRIX_PLUGINS, compares each body and constant with every plugin copy. Passes against claude/family8-reconcile; fails against the pre-reconcile tree. - mypy ratchet, src/common/README.md, CHANGELOG (Unreleased, New modules). - sports_shared and sports_rotation docstrings: the three methods leave the "stay per-plugin" list. - docs/SPORTS_UNIFICATION.md: family 8 status and decisions; item 8 restated to match what measuring found (the standings branch never ran; the season year only matters to college football). perf(espn): remember settled day chunks between window refreshes (#754)
Since ESPN started rejecting date ranges, every scoreboard's hourly Recent/Upcoming refresh re-asks its 22-day window (14 back, 7 ahead) one day at a time. Measured on hdpi 2026-10-02 (NFL, college football, MLB, college baseball, NHL): the hourly refresh was ~270 of 321 ESPN requests and ~21 of 24.6MB in the hour. Days that ended three or more days ago cannot change, and they were 68% of the window's bytes (6.9 of 10.2MB). _fetch_one_chunk now keeps a settled chunk (last day <= UTC today - 3) in memory for 24h as zlib-compressed JSON, keyed by URL, the other params and the chunk, and answers it from there. Both range paths go through it: fetch_espn_scoreboard and BackgroundDataService._fetch_in_date_chunks. Each hit is parsed afresh, failed and capped chunks are not stored, and the memory is bounded (512 entries / 8MB compressed). Against live ESPN, a second refresh of the five hdpi windows went from 111 requests and 10.18MB to 50 requests and 3.23MB with identical events; the memory held 60 entries in 585KB. feat(common): sports_rotation -- the reconciled other-games rotation (sports family 7) (#786)
* feat(common): sports_rotation -- the reconciled other-games rotation (sports family 7) New hardware-free module src/common/sports_rotation.py, copied from ledmatrix-plugins claude/family7-reconcile once the nine scoreboards made _by_importance, _other_games_window, _advance_other_games_if_due (two bodies each), _rotate_other_games_on_display (two) and _attach_odds_to_rotated_games (three; ufc had none) one body each. All of them live on the plugins' SportsCore, so one mixin, SportsRotationMixin, carries exactly those five plus the default _rankings_loaded, and no manager gains a method it lacks today. - The window advances under _games_lock: update() and display() both advance it, and interleaved, each added a width and skipped a window. - The display path's due-check reads the pool _compose_selection will cut, unfiltered fallback included. - Rotated-in games get odds when show_odds is on (decided 2026-10-09: ufc too), skipped without an odds manager. - _rankings_loaded() is the seam _by_importance asks: the abbreviation table by default; football overrides it to count its by-id rankings. - test/test_sports_rotation.py: the plugins' pinned cases (importance order per rankings table and the seam, the window over time, the display-path rotation incl. the card on screen, redraws and recompose counts, update() and display() in sequence and interleaved on two threads -- with and without the lock -- and rotated-in odds), plus the host contract. - test/test_sports_rotation_parity.py: with LEDMATRIX_PLUGINS, compares each body with every plugin copy (drift-report normalisation plus decorators), checks no other plugin class carries a copy, and that only football overrides _rankings_loaded. Passes against claude/family7-reconcile; fails against the pre-reconcile tree, as it should. - mypy ratchet, src/common/README.md, CHANGELOG (Unreleased, New modules). - sports_shared docstring: _by_importance and _other_games_window (and the long-promoted _is_favorite_game) leave the "stay per-plugin" list. - docs/SPORTS_UNIFICATION.md: family 7 status, decisions, the _rankings_loaded seam; families 5 and 6 marked done and adopted (3.8.1 / ledmatrix-plugins #631, 3.8.2 / #637) instead of "adoption waits". feat(scroll): report a panel that cannot reach its refresh cap, and suggest one it can hold (#759)
* feat(scroll): report a panel that cannot reach its refresh cap, and suggest one it can hold
Scroll speeds are solved against display.hardware.limit_refresh_rate_hz,
which is only a ceiling. A panel that cannot reach it still moves whole
pixels per frame, but every scroll runs slow by the shortfall and the
"smooth" ladder is the cap's, not the panel's. A user rig (Pi 4, 2x128x64,
adafruit-hat-pwm, pwm_bits 9, gpio_slowdown 5) measured 107.6-113.1 Hz under
a 120 Hz cap: 60 px/s ran at 55, and nothing said why.
- scroll_config: refresh_shortfall() (more than 3% under the planned rate),
holdable_cap() (a multiple of 10, 5% under the measurement, since the
measurement is the fast end of an uncapped panel's drift), and
describe_refresh_shortfall().
- FrameTimingRecorder.plan_refresh(): once the measured period has held for
three trusted windows, a shortfall is logged once as a warning naming the
cap to use. DisplayManager calls it only for a real panel, not the
emulator or the fallback canvas. The stats file records
planned_refresh_hz (additive).
- GET /api/v3/config/refresh-rate, plus a hint under the Display tab's
Limit Refresh Rate field (js/pages/display.js) with a button that fills in
the suggested cap.
- _panel_refresh_hz (behind the Vegas slider's advice) ignores a measurement
written under a different cap, so a changed cap stops being advised from
the old rate before the display restarts.
Verified on ledpi with a temporary 200 Hz cap: the warning logged about a
minute after the restart ("about 132 Hz ... Set Limit Refresh Rate to
120 Hz"), the endpoint returned the same shortfall, and the Display tab
showed the hint; its button filled in 120. ledpi was restored afterwards.
Rebased onto main after the Display tab became an ES-module page (#771); the
hint moved from inline script into display.js, with a jsdom test.

* fix(scroll): count only agreeing windows toward the refresh shortfall; ignore a null planned rate
Review fixes on #759.
- A window the period estimate rejects (more than MAX_REFRESH_DROP faster
than the adopted period) no longer counts toward the shortfall check, and
it restarts the run. After a loaded start fixed a slow period, later
windows at the real, faster rate were rejected yet still counted, so the
warning could name the slow rate against a cap the panel was meeting. It
now needs REFRESH_CHECK_WINDOWS consecutive windows that agree with the
period.
- _panel_refresh_hz treats a stats file whose planned_refresh_hz key is
present but null as no measurement. The emulator and the fallback canvas
write it that way (DisplayManager never plans a refresh for them), and
their frame rate says nothing about the cap. A file with no such key (an
older display) keeps the old behaviour.
Three new tests fail on the previous code and pass now.

chore: remove dead code, deprecate unused plugin APIs (over-engineering audit) (#783)
* chore: remove dead code, deprecate unused plugin APIs (over-engineering audit) Whole-tree audit. Every symbol was checked against core, the plugin monorepo and all eight third-party plugins in plugins.json first. - Deprecate (removal 3.10.0) plugin-facing methods nothing calls: LogoDownloader bulk download, ConfigManager backup/secret wrappers, APIHelper extras, BackgroundDataService poll API, PluginManager / PluginStateManager info readers, and a few CacheManager, FontManager, BaseOddsManager, DynamicTeamResolver methods and PluginTestCase. plugin_api_usage.py learns their receiver names; DEPRECATIONS doc regenerated. - Remove core-internal dead code: CacheMetrics, Vegas status/stats plumbing, sync "new cycle" message (followers ignore unknown types), unused operation types, test-only PluginCatalog readers, IPC to_dict and ping, _parse_form_value, CacheStrategyProtocol, ErrorAggregator callbacks, duplicate web response helpers. - Web UI: drop never-mounted json-file-manager.js, the example widget, utils/error_handler.js, four uncalled PluginAPI methods, and 29 escapeHtml shims (call window.LEDEscape directly). Public globals, BaseWidget and widget names unchanged. - Remove six one-off scripts (owner decision) and the unused markupsafe and pytest-mock pins. perf(fetch): cache ESPN scoreboard windows without the parts nothing reads (#749)
The sports scoreboards cache their Recent/Upcoming window as the raw ESPN response, and it stays parsed in the memory tier while fresh. Measured on hdpi, most of it is never drawn: per-team stat leaders, athlete cards (featuredAthletes, probables), team and event links, headlines, video highlights and geo broadcasts. None of those keys is read by core or by any plugin in ledmatrix-plugins. BackgroundDataService now drops them from an ESPN /scoreboard response before caching and delivering it (src/common/espn_payload.py), keeping everything else. On the five hdpi windows that is 10.6MB -> 3.0MB of JSON and ~40MB -> ~12MB of parsed objects, and parsing an expired window gets 3-4x cheaper. submit_fetch_request(slim_payload=False) caches a response whole. feat(common): sports_favorites -- the reconciled favourite matching (sports family 6) (#775)
* feat(common): sports_favorites -- the reconciled favourite matching (sports family 6) New hardware-free module src/common/sports_favorites.py, copied from ledmatrix-plugins claude/family6-reconcile once the nine scoreboards made _is_favorite_game (seven bodies), _select_games_for_display (two) and _select_recent_games_for_display (three) one body each. One mixin per class that carries the methods, so adopting one gives no manager a method it did not have: - SportsFavoritesMixin (SportsCore): _is_favorite_game and _favorite_code. - SportsUpcomingFavoritesMixin: _select_games_for_display. - SportsRecentFavoritesMixin: _select_recent_games_for_display. Each side of a game is named by the 3.5.0 _favorite_key seam (SportsHelpersMixin; the abbreviation by default, nrl overrides it with the ESPN team id and None for a missing id) and compared with favorite_teams stripped and upper-cased. The selection methods give each favourite up to the per-team limit, count a game between two favourites for both, treat only games with an id as possible duplicates and log their summary at INFO. - test/test_sports_favorites.py: the plugins' pinned cases for an abbreviation host and an id-keyed (nrl-style) host -- case, spaces, ids, the NEW collision, the "None" favourite, missing keys; selection order, limits, duplicates and the id-less fix, the INFO summary; host contract, one carrier per method, and SportsGameRulesMixin reaching the shared body. - test/test_sports_favorites_parity.py: with LEDMATRIX_PLUGINS, compares each body with every plugin copy (drift-report normalisation plus decorators), checks no other plugin class carries a copy, and that only nrl overrides _favorite_key. - mypy ratchet, src/common/README.md, CHANGELOG (Unreleased, New modules). - sports_helpers docstrings: _favorite_key now has a caller and an override. - docs/SPORTS_UNIFICATION.md: family 6 status and decisions, and the seam table. SportsCoreSharedMixin._round_robin_favorites still groups by raw abbreviation or _team_in: it is not one of the plugin bodies, so it waits for a later family. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * docs(sports): family 6 also routes the Upcoming favourites-only filter and three live boosts ledmatrix-plugins claude/family6-reconcile now sends the Upcoming update()'s favourites-only pre-filter and the basketball, hockey and lacrosse live favourite boost through _is_favorite_game, so a lower-case favourite works on a favourites-only Upcoming board. chore: prepare the 3.8.1 release (#756)
* chore: prepare the 3.8.1 release Bumps src.__version__ to 3.8.1 and moves the Unreleased CHANGELOG entries under a 3.8.1 heading, with an empty Unreleased above it. The reason for the release is smooth scrolling at held-frame speeds. On 3.8.0 the default 50 px/s snapped to a stepped 48 px/s on a 120 Hz panel, and any scroll slower than one pixel per refresh showed a half-pixel step across the middle of the panel. Both are fixed on main (#710, #711) but were in no release, so every stable-channel device still had them. - #710's CHANGELOG entry had been filed under 3.8.0 although it merged after the v3.8.0 tag; it moves to 3.8.1. - #711 had no CHANGELOG entry; it gets one. scripts/check_release_version.py v3.8.1 passes. fix(sports): honour every pending kickoff in the idle back-off, not just the first (#772)
_note_scheduled_start_candidate kept one kickoff. While it was inside its 15-minute grace every later kickoff was refused, and by the time the grace ended the later one had passed and was refused again as already past. So of two favourites kicking off within 15 minutes of each other, the second lost its own grace: if the first game was not live by then (a rain delay, a postponement, ESPN slow to flip it) and ESPN had not flipped the second either, the back-off went straight back to its ceiling and the second game was noticed up to that late. Later kickoffs now wait in a short queue (_later_scheduled_starts, the earliest 8). When the current kickoff's grace ends, the earliest queued one still inside its own grace takes over -- including one that has already passed. A kickoff still holds the live cadence for at most its own grace, so a postponed game costs the same quarter of an hour as before, and _next_scheduled_start_ts keeps its meaning for anything that reads or sets it. The promotion is a module function, so the mixin's method set is unchanged. Table tests replay the idle loop on a fake clock over kickoff schedules; mutation-checked (the old code fails 10 of the new tests). Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

feat(common): sports_game_over -- the reconciled game-over check (sports family 5) (#770)
* feat(common): sports_game_over -- the reconciled game-over check (sports family 5) New hardware-free module src/common/sports_game_over.py with SportsGameOverMixin._is_game_really_over, the scoreboards' SportsLive check that drops a game ESPN still lists as live, copied from ledmatrix-plugins claude/family5-reconcile once the nine copies (five bodies) became one. Over on a final period text; from period FINAL_PERIOD on, also on a 0:00 clock string unless the score is level (a tie at the end of regulation goes to overtime; a game that ends tied ends on its final status). FINAL_PERIOD is the one per-sport seam, a class attribute defaulting to None (the clock never ends a game); the scoreboards declare 3 (hockey), 4 (basketball, football, lacrosse) or None (afl, nrl, soccer, baseball, ufc). - test/test_sports_game_over.py: the plugins' pinned matrix folded to the three FINAL_PERIOD values, edge shapes, the tie guard, ufc's recorded ESPN MMA states, an override deferring through super() (baseball), the base order with SportsLiveSharedMixin._detect_stale_games, host contract. - test/test_sports_game_over_parity.py: with LEDMATRIX_PLUGINS, compares the body with every plugin copy (drift-report normalisation plus decorators) and each plugin's FINAL_PERIOD with the owner's decision. - mypy ratchet, src/common/README.md, CHANGELOG (Unreleased, New modules). - docs/SPORTS_UNIFICATION.md: family 5 status and decisions; the seam tables now match the code (FINAL_PERIOD defaults to None; the CLOCK_COUNTS_DOWN seam never existed and is gone from the doc). fix(espn): fetch a window's edge months whole, cap chunk requests per process (#751)
- fetch_espn_date_chunks() asks for a window's partial edge month whole when the window covers ESPN_MONTH_COVER_MIN_DAYS (7) or more of its days, trimmed to the window by US Eastern start date. New espn_request_chunks(). - Chunk requests share one process-wide cap of ESPN_CHUNK_WORKERS (6) in flight. - A new process starts as if a range had just been rejected, so it no longer spends a doomed 400 per window at start. - Also: _eastern_zone() without try/except/pass (Codacy), and test_on_demand_live_and_restore reads the last on-demand state write rather than the last cache write (the font-usage publisher raced it; main CI had failed on it since #748). fix(sports): scroll and Vegas cards name the printed date's own weekday (#747)
With scroll_card.date_format "weekday", a Friday 8 PM ET game read "Sat Oct 2" on the scroll and Vegas cards. Cause: the extractor prints the "M/D" in the plugin's resolved zone (its own setting, then the global one, then the system zone), but the card is handed only the plugin's config. Its timezone ships as "", so card_tzinfo fell back to UTC and the weekday belonged to the UTC date: the next day for evening games in the Americas, the previous day for morning games east of UTC (Auckland, Kiritimati). Fix: every zone is within a day of UTC, so the printed date is the start's UTC date or a neighbour of it. _format_date_as now takes the game and names the weekday of whichever of those days has the printed month and day, falling back to the zone-based weekday only when the start cannot place the date (no offset, unparseable, or more than a day away). The switch-mode scorebug shares the formatter and passes the game too, so the twins stay identical; it already used the resolved zone and draws what it drew before. Public signatures are unchanged. Tests cover US DST end, New Year's Eve, both sides of the date line, NZ DST start and UTC+14. The twins test's weekday pin is updated: the drawn date now agrees, and only the bare weekday helpers still differ. Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

fix(display): a non-numeric plugin duration no longer stops the display; narrow scroll strips no longer raise (#739)
* fix(display): a plugin duration that is not a number no longer stops the display DisplayController._get_display_duration returned whatever the plugin's get_display_duration() gave back. clock-simple, calendar and countdown return their display_duration setting straight from config.json, so a value saved as "20" or null reached _resolve_durations as a string or None, and its `<= 0` check raised a TypeError. Nothing in the loop caught it: run()'s outer handler logged "Unexpected error in display controller" and cleanup() ended the service when that plugin's screen came up, and systemd restarted it into the same crash. The plugin's answer is now read as seconds: a finite number or a numeric string is used (as BasePlugin.get_display_duration already accepts), a number at or below zero still goes to _resolve_durations' 15 s rule, and anything else -- None, a non-numeric string, a bool, NaN, infinity, or a get_display_duration() that raises -- gets the 30 s a mode without a plugin gets. The warning is logged once per plugin, not at every screen. Tests: test/test_display_duration_not_a_number.py, including the real run() on the run-loop harness, which returned at t=30 before the fix. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(scroll): a strip narrower than the panel no longer raises on every frame ScrollHelper._get_visible_portion_integer handled a frame that runs off the end of the strip by copying the strip's tail and then the rest of the frame from its head, which assumed the head was at least that wide. For a strip narrower than the panel that raised "could not broadcast input array" at every position, so get_visible_portion() never returned a frame and the caller logged a traceback each frame. Vegas composes such a strip (lead_in_width defaults to 0) when its content is narrower than the chain. A wrapping frame is now taken column by column modulo the strip's width (np.take, mode='wrap', into the reused frame buffer): the tail then the head, as before, and a narrow strip repeated across the panel. The same path takes a position before the start of the strip, whose [-n:m] slice was empty and made frombytes raise; the integer and sub-pixel fast paths now leave a negative start to it. A zero-width strip is still a black frame. Tests: test/test_scroll_helper_narrow_strip.py. perf: import package re-exports on first use (#724)
src/common/__init__.py and src/plugin_system/__init__.py resolve their re-exports lazily (PEP 562 __getattr__, __all__ and __dir__ unchanged, TYPE_CHECKING imports for mypy), and sync_manager imports numpy only where send_frame uses it. The web process no longer loads numpy, freetype helpers and PluginManager just to import path_safety, store_manager or schema_manager (~67 MB to ~54 MB RSS on a Pi 4). from src.common import X and from src.plugin_system import X keep working, including submodule imports. perf: cheap per-frame and per-fetch savings (#725)
Six small savings with no behaviour change: the odds fetch no longer pretty-prints every response for a debug line; the scroll integer-slice path drops a redundant full-frame np.ascontiguousarray; ledmatrix-web.service gets MALLOC_ARENA_MAX=2 like the display unit; core ESPN responses are parsed via response_json (orjson when installed); and the scroll frame stats go to INFO only for degraded windows plus a 5-minute heartbeat. perf(display): throttle the per-frame update tick; check strips without building them (#731)
The frame loops and the dwell sleep run PluginManager.run_scheduled_updates() at most every 0.25 s instead of after every frame (the top of each loop pass still ticks unthrottled), and SportsScrollDisplay and the sync follower ask ScrollHelper.has_strip() instead of building cached_image just to see whether a strip exists. fix(frame-timing): keep the GC monitor quiet at interpreter shutdown (#734)
A collection during interpreter shutdown called GcMonitor after the module's `time` global was torn down, printing "Exception ignored while calling GC callback ... 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'perf_counter'" at the end of service and test runs. - GcMonitor binds its clock and sys.is_finalizing at construction and does nothing once the interpreter is finalizing. - install_gc_monitor() unregisters it with atexit; new uninstall_gc_monitor(). - DisplayManager.cleanup() (reached from SIGTERM via run()'s finally) unregisters it alongside the frame recorder. feat(timing): time garbage-collection pauses in the frame stats (#722)
A GcMonitor in src/common/frame_timing.py, installed once per process from gc.callbacks by the display manager (and render_bench), counts collections and seconds per generation, the longest, and those of 20 ms or more. A long one tags the next presented frame 'gc' in record(), so frame_soak shows its late rate under 'after work'; the stats file gains an additive 'gc' block printed as a 'Garbage collection' line; and a Render stall dump says when a long collection ran inside the stall. Diagnostic only: nothing tunes, freezes or disables the collector. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

perf(sports): reuse an unchanged scroll strip at the start of a turn (#719)
A scoreboard in scroll mode no longer redraws every card at the start of a recent/upcoming turn whose games have not changed (~1.4 s for seven football cards at 192x48 on a Pi 4, with the render thread waiting). SportsScrollDisplayManager keeps one display per slate (game type + leagues; up to 4 per game type, at most 6 MB per plugin of strips not on screen) and rewinds the strip it built last time when its games, rankings, config, panel size and date are unchanged and it is under 10 minutes old. First turns, changed slates, live strips and empty turns are drawn as before; get_scroll_display() still answers with the strip on screen. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

perf(display): skip preview work nobody reads (lazy checksum, 1 Hz snapshot writer) (#717)
Mid-scroll, update_display() no longer checksums every frame: it asks is_currently_scrolling() once per frame and reuses the answer, hashes only when dirty tracking can skip a static frame, and the preview snapshot asks its policy first and hashes only when a write or touch could follow (decide() is monotone, pinned by a property test). With the preview open the snapshot is written at most once a second (VIEWER_INTERVAL 1.0 s, was 0.2 s; the SSE stream re-read it once a second, so four encodes in five went unread); the stream now polls its mtime every 0.25 s (VIEWER_POLL_INTERVAL), so the preview stays about as fresh. The PNG is written at compress_level=1. --preview soaks are not comparable across this change. Merged with #716: _scan_segments takes the frame's one scrolling answer and #716's static-handover pass-through, as soaked on ledpi (A B B A, 20 min each: main 0.118% / 0.113% late, with #716 and this 0.107% / 0.104%). perf(common): rasterize outlined text once instead of nine times (#718)
New draw_text_outlined(draw, xy, text, font, fill, outline_color=(0, 0, 0), offsets=OUTLINE_SQUARE) in src/common/text_helper.py, with OUTLINE_SQUARE and OUTLINE_CROSS. It rasterizes the string once and stamps the mask at each outline offset instead of one draw.text per offset: the same pixels as the nine-draw loop (an equivalence sweep across the bundled fonts, image and font modes, colours and positions pins it, on Windows and Linux), about 8x faster per outlined string. Fractional coordinates, multiline text, fonts other than a plain FreeTypeFont, other image modes and a replaced draw.text take the old loop. SportsCoreSharedMixin._draw_text_with_outline and TextHelper.draw_text_with_outline draw through it; the scoreboards' own game_renderer loops adopt it in a ledmatrix-plugins change after a core release. fix(display): end the scroll state at scroller-to-static handovers (#716)
A static plugin screen that follows a scroller no longer starts with the ticker's lagging rows on scan-compensated panels, and the 1 Hz loop's second frame is no longer recorded as a ~1 s mid-scroll freeze / Render stall. The display controller calls DisplayManager.end_scroll_for_static_screen() before a static screen's first display() (clears the scan history; _scan_segments passes its frames through in one swap) and set_scrolling_state(False) after it; the scroller's hold stays until then, so late-frame counts are unchanged. A screen's first frame is tagged 'handover': gaps of 250 ms or more before it go to the additive handover_freezes (frame_soak prints 'Handover gaps'), not freezes. The display thread is named display-<plugin id>. The WiFi notice and the schedule-off blank are not covered yet (docs list them as a follow-up). ledpi A B B A soak (20 min each, --preview): main 0.118% / 0.113% late with 6 / 3 freezes; with this and #717 0.107% / 0.104% late, 0 freezes. feat(scroll): show which scroll speeds are smooth on this panel (#710)
* feat(scroll): show which scroll speeds are smooth on this panel The Vegas Scroll Speed slider now says what the panel will do with the chosen speed and offers the nearest smooth ones to click. Backed by scroll_config.speed_advice() and GET /api/v3/config/scroll-speed-advice, which uses the refresh the display measured rather than the cap. Also stops the default 50 px/s snapping to a stepped 48 px/s (2px every 5 refreshes, 24fps) on a 120Hz panel: the low-fps penalty in solve_crisp() now loses to 60 or 40 px/s. 100Hz panels are unchanged. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(scroll): hint threw before its timer variables existed; count 25-30fps as stepped The Vegas speed hint called refreshScrollSpeedHint() before the let declarations it uses, so it never rendered (found on ledpi). And the solver's low-fps penalty stopped at 25fps, which let a measured 125.7Hz panel keep a 25.1fps 2px-every-5-refreshes scroll. chore: prepare the 3.8.0 release (#709)
* chore(deprecation): remove the 35 APIs deprecated for 3.8.0 The usage scan (docs/DEPRECATIONS_3.8.md, regenerated 2026-10-01 and committed here) finds no call or override of any of them in the 46 monorepo plugins or the 8 third-party plugins plugins.json lists; the only core callers were other deprecated methods removed alongside. - CacheManager: 13 methods, plus the private helpers only has_data_changed used (_has_*_changed, _is_market_open). - DisplayManager: 7 methods, plus WEATHER_COLORS and the private _draw_sun/_cloud/_rain/_snow/_storm helpers only the icon methods used. - FontManager: 14 methods, plus size_tokens, _save_overrides and _clear_plugin_font_cache. font_overrides and _load_overrides stay: resolve_font() still applies config/font_overrides.json. performance_stats stays: get_font() keeps it and tests read it. - PluginManager.get_enabled_plugins. test_deprecation.py pins only the two 3.9.0 markers now; the scanner tests run against a stand-in core instead of the real markers. The memory-tier tests read stats through log_memory_cache_stats() and the component, and the test of the removed _clear_plugin_font_cache goes. Docs drop the removed methods' reference entries; the Deprecated APIs table becomes "Removed in 3.8.0". CHANGELOG gains a Removed section. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * chore(deprecation): drop the test harness's copies of the removed icon methods VisualTestDisplayManager still drew weather icons that DisplayManager no longer has, so a plugin's visual tests could pass on calls that raise AttributeError on the real display. Its draw_sun/draw_cloud/draw_rain/ draw_snow/draw_weather_icon/draw_text_with_icons, WEATHER_COLORS and the private helpers go, with the tests that exercised them. The CHANGELOG's Deprecations entries no longer say nothing is removed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * chore: prepare the 3.8.0 release Bumps src.__version__ to 3.8.0 and turns Unreleased into ## 3.8.0, with a summary and a New modules list (vegas_elements, testing.vegas, sports_vegas; display_watchdog, plugin_catalog, plugin_runtime) for plugins flooring on 3.8.0. The summary and New modules list name them (sports consolidation stage 4's four modules, src/ipc, field_model), stage 4's section says to floor on 3.8.0, and src/common/README.md marks its four modules 3.8.0 instead of Unreleased. perf(scroll): extend and trim the Vegas strip in place (#701)
* perf(timing): say which render-thread work a late frame followed The soak already says how often a moving frame reached the panel late, but not what the render thread was doing just before it. Vegas does two kinds of work there between frames -- building its strip (compose, extend) and, with live elements, patching changed pixels into it -- and deciding whether either is affordable needs their own numbers. - FrameTimingRecorder.note_op(kind, nbytes) tags the next presented frame. Totals gain op_frames, late_op_frames, op_freezes and op_bytes per kind; aggregate() still takes frames without ops. The file schema is unchanged. - Vegas tags compose and every strip extension (with the bytes it copied). - frame_soak prints an "after work" table: frames, late %, freezes and MB moved per kind, only when something tagged its work. - render_bench gains --strip-screens (Vegas-sized strips), --patch-bytes / --patch-every / --patch-where (in-place column writes, as a live element update does) and --extend-every-screens / --extend-width (append + trim on a fixed cadence that holds the strip's width). No runtime behaviour changes: this is the measurement gate for live Vegas elements. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * docs(changelog): note the frame-op attribution and bench modes Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * perf(scroll): build the strip's PIL image only when something reads it Every Vegas strip extension rebuilt ScrollHelper.cached_image from cached_array in full, twice (append, then trim), on the render thread: Image.fromarray is 1.7ms for an 8,000px strip and 3.8ms for 20,000px on a Pi 4 (measured on ledpi), about two thirds of an extension's render-thread cost. Nothing on the frame path reads the image's pixels; every frame is cut from the array. cached_image is now a property. append_content and drop_scrolled_prefix defer it; the first read builds it from the array it started with and keeps it only if the strip has not changed meanwhile, so a sync push racing an extension cannot leave a stale image cached. Assigning cached_image stores exactly what was assigned, as before. has_strip() says whether there is a strip without building its image; the helper's frame path, Vegas and the adapter's scroll-cache invalidation use it. The strip is also no longer held in memory twice. In Vegas the image is now built only by a multi-display sync push. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * feat(vegas): live elements -- a plugin API for content that changes while it scrolls Vegas bakes each plugin's pictures into one strip, so a card already on its way across the panel keeps what it showed when it was drawn. This adds the API and bookkeeping for content that can be updated in place; the worker that redraws and swaps it follows separately. No shipped plugin implements the hook yet, so nothing changes for users. Plugin API (core 3.8.0), all no-ops by default: - BasePlugin.get_vegas_elements() -> [VegasElement(key, image, version, live, refresh_hz)]: named, fixed-width pieces of Vegas content. - BasePlugin.redraw_vegas_element(key, width, height, at): a lock-free redraw for content that changes with time. - BasePlugin.notify_vegas_data_changed(): data that lands outside update(). - src/plugin_system/vegas_elements.py (VegasElement, re-exported from base_plugin). Core: - PluginAdapter asks a plugin that implements the hook for elements on the background fetch only (under its lock, on its own canvas); every other path keeps get_vegas_content(). Live elements are pinned (padded with content_padding, never trimmed), tagged with their key, digest and data epoch in Image.info so the existing cache and group plumbing carry them unchanged, and untagged if a width budget crops them. - RenderPipeline records where each live element lands (ElementRecord), in absolute strip columns a trim does not move; the block-start arithmetic is shared with the STATIC markers. - PluginManager update listeners (add/remove_update_listener, notify_data_changed): told the moment update() completes, not at the next ~4s Vegas poll. The coordinator uses one to move each plugin's data epoch on. - vegas_scroll.live_refresh (kill switch), live_max_hz, live_min_interval, live_lead_screens; per-plugin core-owned vegas_live. Live elements are off under multi-display sync, in swap mode and with offscreen_prefetch off. - scripts/check_plugin.py checks the element contract (src/plugin_system/testing/vegas.py); test/fixtures/plugins/vegas-live-stub is a working example. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * feat(vegas): live elements update in place while they scroll One background worker (src/vegas_mode/live_worker.py) redraws a plugin's live elements when its data epoch moves on (update listener) or on their refresh_hz, nearest the screen first, and hands changed pixels lock-free to the render thread, which copies them into the strip between frames (RenderPipeline.apply_live_patches, ScrollHelper.patch_columns): at most four patches or two screens of bytes a frame, no drawing or locks there. The worker takes over group prefetch once a live element is placed, runs inside the render gate, and is supervised. Update tick 1s while live elements exist. Web UI switch for live_refresh. OFFSCREEN_RENDERING.md describes what was built and why SegmentStrip was not needed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * feat(sports): live Vegas cards for the scoreboards (shared layer) One live element per game, drawn only when what the card shows changes, so a score changes on a card already crossing the panel. The shared part, so each scoreboard adopts it in a few lines: - src/common/sports_vegas.py: game_key, game_fingerprint (the whole game dict, frozen: no drawn field can be missed), dedupe_games, VegasCardCache, StickyOdds (odds a live poll left out stay drawn), finished_games / with_finished_games (a game that just went final keeps its card, after its league's live games; one a heuristic only judged over keeps its live state, so a tied end of regulation never shows FINAL early). - SportsScrollDisplay.make_vegas_renderer() is the override point; build_vegas_elements() and SportsScrollDisplayManager .get_vegas_elements_for() do the rest. A card's version includes its teams' ranks, which the renderer draws from the rankings cache. - SportsLiveSharedMixin._record_finished_game() / finished_games_snapshot(): held for FINISHED_GAME_TTL after it leaves the live list. A sport that does not implement make_vegas_renderer keeps its ordinary Vegas content, so no scoreboard changes until it opts in. scripts/render_plugin.py --vegas renders a plugin's Vegas block as the ticker lays it out, and --timeline stacks it at successive moments as the ticker would update it in place; the join is now render_pipeline.join_plugin_rows(). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * feat(vegas): keep live games in the ticker by default display.vegas_scroll.live_in_ticker now defaults to true: through a live game the marquee keeps running and the live scoreboard takes extra turns in it -- its cards updating in place while they scroll -- instead of the ticker giving way to the full-screen scoreboard. The new default would reach nobody on its own: every existing config holds an explicit false copied from the template (there was no control for it), and the template merge only adds missing keys. ConfigManager therefore turns a stored false on once, with a backup, and records live_in_ticker_migrated so a false chosen afterwards stays. The marker is never in the template. A "Keep live games in the ticker" checkbox under Vegas mode sets it. Tests that pin the full-screen takeover now say live_in_ticker=false. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * feat(dev): preview a plugin's Vegas strip in the dev server The dev server's View selector gains "Vegas strip (live elements)" and "Vegas strip (plain Vegas content)": the plugin's block of the Vegas ticker, laid out by the ticker's own code (render_vegas_strip, as render_plugin.py --vegas uses), with its live elements listed. /api/render takes "vegas": "live" | "plain"; the display view is unchanged. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * perf(scroll): extend and trim the Vegas strip in place Every strip extension rebuilt the whole strip (np.concatenate: 2-2.6 ms for a 10-14k px strip at 512x64 on a Pi 4) and every trim copied what was left (1.2-1.8 ms), on the render thread. With ~4 ms of slack per refresh, every extension frame on hdpi missed its refresh (5/5 in each soak run). The strip now lives in a buffer with spare room; cached_array is a view of its live columns. An append writes only the new columns (~0.2 ms), a trim only moves the view's start, and the one full copy happens when the buffer is reallocated (STRIP_SPARE_FACTOR 3: about once every two strip-lengths scrolled). A cached_array set from outside -- the multi-display follower's read-only one, create_scrolling_image's -- is never written through, and a new strip lets the old buffer go. last_copy_bytes says what was copied, and the Vegas frame-timing attribution reports that instead of the whole strip. test_scroll_helper_in_place.py: the buffer is reused and only new columns copied, trims copy nothing, reallocation when the room runs out, outside arrays untouched, and random appends/trims/patches/scrolling checked frame by frame against the old copying strip (mutation-checked). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * refactor(sports): a default _determine_game_type on SportsScrollDisplay render_vegas_card looked the method up with getattr and a None default, which static analysis (Codacy) reports as calling something that may not be callable. The base class now has the default -- the card type from the game's state -- and the plugins that define their own override it as before. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * refactor(scroll): no assert in _extended_strip An assert vanishes under python -O (Codacy); a real check says the same. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix: review follow-ups on the shared live-card layer - The reused Vegas renderer always gets the current rankings, empty included, so ranks cleared since are not kept drawn. - render_plugin.py: --timeline refuses --no-live (a timeline shows live elements changing), --timeline/--no-live need --vegas, and the Vegas paths create the output's directory like the display path does. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * perf(vegas): lay a group's blocks out before the extension, off the render thread #701 cut the strip copy, but the frame after an extension was still late: the render thread also joined each plugin's rows (separation_gap measures every pair) and pasted the blocks into an addition image, ~37 ms on hdpi (Pi 4, 512x64) against ~3.75 ms of slack. The thread that fetched the group now does that as each member arrives: RenderPipeline.prepare_group_member joins the rows and turns the block into pixels (the prefetch thread and the live worker, under the render gate). extend_scroll_content takes those blocks, and ScrollHelper.append_content writes items -- images or RGB arrays -- straight into the strip's spare room, blanking only the gaps. A member that was not prepared (an inline fetch) is joined at the extension as before; the strip is identical either way. On hdpi the extension's render-thread work goes from 37.5 ms to 3.2 ms p50 in place (6.9 ms when the buffer is reallocated). The helper's per-append INFO line, a duplicate of the pipeline's, is now DEBUG. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix: review follow-ups on the shared live-card layer - The reused Vegas renderer always gets the current rankings, empty included, so ranks cleared since are not kept drawn. - render_plugin.py: --timeline refuses --no-live (a timeline shows live elements changing), --timeline/--no-live need --vegas, and the Vegas paths create the output's directory like the display path does. feat(vegas): live elements update in place while they scroll (#697)
- src/plugin_system/vegas_elements.py (VegasElement, re-exported from base_plugin). feat(common): sports_celebration, sports_fetch and sports_card_wrappers, promoted from the scoreboards (sports consolidation stage 3) (#672)
Three new hardware-free modules holding code the scoreboard plugins carry as identical copies (executable AST, docstrings stripped, checked across every carrying plugin at ledmatrix-plugins 30455671). The bodies are the plugins'; the changes are type annotations for the mypy ratchet, the colour helpers losing their leading underscore as public free functions, and two comments that described the plugins' files. - src/common/sports_celebration.py: SportsCelebrationMixin, the score/win takeover drawn by afl, football, hockey, nrl and soccer (_draw_celebration_layout and the palette, backdrop, scenery, confetti, crest and _fit_font steps, with their class constants), plus the colour helpers (logo_palette, lift_color, cap_luminance, mix_color, ...). Only the drawing: _start_celebration, _check_for_goal/_check_for_score, _check_for_win and display() differ between the plugins and stay there. - src/common/sports_fetch.py: SportsFetchMixin, the four SportsCore methods identical in all nine scoreboards: _fetch_season_directly, _background_fetches_espn_ranges, _needs_previous_day and _wants_live_odds, with _LOOKBACK_CUTOFF_HOUR and _LIVE_ODDS_LOOKAHEAD. _get_timezone, _extract_game_details and _fetch_data are as identical and stay behind, for the reasons sports_shared gives (a per-plugin import; the abstract contract); so does SportsUpcoming.__init__, since no src/common mixin has a constructor. - src/common/sports_card_wrappers.py: SportsCardWrappersMixin, the seventeen sports_card delegations the eight game renderers carry (15 in all eight, 2 in all but football, whose own versions override them). _schema_font_size/_resolve_font_size look identical but read each plugin's own _SCHEMA_PATH, so they stay. Each mixin has no __init__ and creates no attributes (the host contract is declared as annotations only), defines no name the mixins beside it define, and documents the attributes it reads; a host-contract test parses each and fails on an undocumented read. A method kept on a plugin's class wins over the mixin's. Tests: behaviour ported from the plugins' celebration, odds, lookback and date-range tests against stub hosts carrying exactly the contract, with crests drawn by the test (test_sports_celebration.py, test_sports_fetch.py, test_sports_card_wrappers.py), and test_sports_stage3_parity.py, which with LEDMATRIX_PLUGINS set compares every body with every plugin copy that is left (58 pass against the plugins today; a copy that is gone counts as adopted). All three modules are on the mypy ratchet, in src/common/README.md, the CHANGELOG's Unreleased section and SPORTS_UNIFICATION's module table. Nothing in core uses them yet. Full suite: the same 67 failing test ids as main (Windows-only), 77 more passing. Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

fix(common): favourite check no longer calls the Europa League finished between matchdays (#670)
On 2026-09-29 ESPN's uefa.europa scoreboard still showed the 17 September matchday, so every event was past. Its calendar is a "list" of rounds (League Phase to 30 Jan 2027, then the knockout rounds to the final), not a match-day whitelist, and the league's season type is a soccer id rather than 2/3, so neither 3.6.1 rule applied and the check said the season had finished. When every event is past, a round in a list calendar that has not started yet now draws no conclusion. Only a round's start date counts: end dates are padded past the last game (AFL's Grand Final round still had a day to run three days after the Grand Final), and rounds in an offseason phase (college football's All-Star week) are skipped. Season end dates are still ignored, so PLL (season to 2027-01-01) stays "finished", as do the World Cup and AFL. Of 28 live ESPN scoreboards only uefa.europa's message changes. fix(common): favourite check no longer calls a started postseason a finished season (#667)
* fix(common): favourite check no longer calls a started postseason a finished season The day after a regular season ends, ESPN's default scoreboard still returns that last regular-season day, while leagues[0].season has moved to Postseason. All events were in the past, so the check logged "the season has finished" for MLB on 2026-09-29 while the upcoming manager in the same process was showing TB's wild-card games. When every event is past and the league is in a later in-season phase (regular season or postseason) than all of the returned events, draw no conclusion. The offseason is excluded, so a genuinely finished season is still reported as finished. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(common): favourite check reports the next matchday between soccer rounds Between matchdays ESPN's soccer scoreboard keeps showing the last one, so every event is in the past and in the league's current phase, which the postseason rule does not cover; the check said the Premier League season had finished on 2026-09-29 (last games 20 September, next 10 October). When the league calendar is a "day" whitelist, its entries are days with games, so a future one is used as the next fixture. MLB's day calendar is a blacklist and is not read that way; PLL's whitelist has no future days and is still reported as finished. feat(common): favorite_team_check and sports_timezone, promoted from the scoreboards (sports consolidation stage 2) (#665)
* feat(common): favorite_team_check and sports_timezone, promoted from the scoreboards (sports consolidation stage 2) Two new hardware-free modules, taken from files the scoreboard plugins carry as copies: - src/common/favorite_team_check.py: FavoriteTeamCheck(logger, leagues), the seven byte-identical <sport>_favorite_check.py copies. Same code; the only additions are two type annotations (for the mypy ratchet). - src/common/sports_timezone.py: resolve_timezone_name(), resolve_timezone(), system_timezone_name(), from the ten <sport>_timezone.py copies. They differed only in the plugin label named in the nothing-resolved warning and the write-back-bug values, which become keyword-only arguments (plugin_label, writeback_fixed_in). Same resolution order and log text. Tests are ported from the plugins' own (test_favorite_check.py, test_schedule_note_uses_game_dates.py, test_timezone_resolution.py; the timezone ones run once per plugin's values and pin the exact warning text). ci: mypy ratchet -- keep type-clean modules clean (71 modules, 536 -> 442 errors) (#661)
* ci: mypy ratchet -- keep type-clean modules clean mypy-clean.txt lists the 71 modules under src/ that type-check clean; scripts/check_types.py runs mypy (--follow-imports=silent) on exactly those files and fails on any error or a missing/unsorted/duplicate entry. A new "Type check (mypy ratchet)" CI job runs it with mypy 1.20.2 and pinned stubs; the manual pre-commit mypy hook now runs the same script (a local hook, so mypy sees the installed requirements like CI does). 35 modules were made clean with annotation-only fixes: hints, typing.cast, TYPE_CHECKING imports, implicit-Optional defaults made explicit, and annotations widened (never guards removed) where mypy called a defensive isinstance check unreachable. No runtime behaviour change. mypy.ini: numpy and orjson are treated as Any (follow_imports=skip, also for stubs). numpy 2.3+ stubs use 3.12 `type` statements that mypy won't parse at python_version 3.10, and orjson is optional, so seeing its stubs made the result depend on whether it was installed. fix(core): font zip cache, monotonic timers, resolver back-off, and other core/common fixes (#654)
* fix(core): font zip cache, monotonic timers, resolver back-off, and other core/common fixes - font_manager: a .zip font URL is served as its extracted font after a restart (the cached-file check returned the archive first); downloads use requests with a 30s timeout into a temp file + os.replace. - api_helper / sync_manager: rate-limit and heartbeat/leader timeouts use time.monotonic(); last_request_time and the status file's ts stay wall-clock. set_on_new_cycle docstring no longer claims core uses it. - logo_helper: the placeholder uses the same scaled box as a real logo. - permission_utils: one _sudo_bash_candidates() helper (with the sudoers exact-argv rationale) shared by sudo_remove_directory, which now retries the next bash path on a sudo refusal, and install_requirements_file. - dynamic_team_resolver: failed/empty fetch backs off 5 min; duplicate INFO log and contradictory docstring example fixed. - element_style: scale default looked up through element aliases. - background_data_service: cache-hit callback runs outside the lock. - config_arrays: union-aware type check (["array","null"]); stale dotToNested() reference removed. - auto_update_setup: non-dict auto_update reads as off; temp result file unlinked when the write fails. - exceptions: constructors copy the caller's context dict. - logging_config: StructuredFormatter json.dumps(default=str). - error_aggregator: removed unused export_path/export_to_file/_auto_export. - Docstrings: validate_file_upload max_size_mb, raise_on_errors. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(sync): retry the status-file rename like the other atomic writers On Windows os.replace can fail with "Access is denied" while a scanner briefly holds the target open; config_manager_atomic._replace already retries that (and re-raises at once on other platforms). The sync status writer called os.replace directly, which made test_concurrent_writers_each_use_their_own_temp_file flaky on Windows. fix(display): thread-safety for deferred updates, BDF faces and follower image; one refresh default (#652)
- DisplayManager.defer_update()/process_deferred_updates(): one lock around every queue mutation (appends from the update thread were lost to the render thread's filter/slice reassignments); callables run outside it. - FontManager and element_style no longer cache BDF freetype.Face objects process-wide (load_bdf_face caches them per thread); element_style's LRU is locked against get/move_to_end vs eviction races. - limit_refresh_rate_hz default is one constant, DEFAULT_REFRESH_LIMIT_HZ = 100 (the template's), for the library options, refresh_hz, the matrix guard, Vegas and scroll_config. Previously a missing key capped the panel at 90 while pacing assumed 100. - Sync follower: the TCP thread queues the leader's scroll image; the render thread swaps image/array/width in between frames. - update_display() error log rate-limited (traceback first, then once a minute with a count); swallowed DisplayController exceptions log at DEBUG. - Root display_controller.py runs run.py via runpy. - stream_manager: correct the RLock release comments; merge duplicate if. fix: web UI and src.common bugs (wifi wrong-password, plugin icon, starlark toggle, API caching, scroll/logo/font helpers) (#646)
- wifi: keep the "wrong_password:" prefix through the restore/AP fallback so the UI's incorrect-password prompt fires again. - /plugins/installed returns the manifest's icon (string only). - /starlark/apps/<id>/toggle coerces `enabled` and delegates to _toggle_starlark_app (disk before memory, no KeyError, "false" is false). - /api/v3/ JSON GETs are sent Cache-Control: no-store; non-JSON keeps 5s. - ScrollHelper.set_scrolling_image converts non-RGB input (alpha onto black); create/set_scrolling_image reset last_update_time like reset_scroll. - LogoHelper backs off a failed download per path for MISSING_LOGO_RECHECK_SECONDS; cleared on invalidate/clear_cache. - refresh_placeholder_timestamp saves atomically. - FontManager.clear_cache / _clear_plugin_font_cache bump cache_generation. - Odds manager: per-game logs to DEBUG; JSON decode error caught before RequestException (same cooldown). - element_style mangled continuations; startup validator skips null plugin blocks and reuses the controller's discovery. - src/common/README lists frame_timing, json_body, render_gate. fix(display): Vegas resumes after live priority, and six smaller runtime fixes (#644)
- Vegas: a live-priority pause was only lifted from inside run_frame(), which returns before that check while paused, so the ticker never came back until a restart. run_iteration() now resumes it (the controller only calls it when nothing preempts Vegas); start()/stop() clear the pause state. Iteration length is timed with the monotonic clock. - Dim schedule: a per-day disabled day now updates the minute-gate cache, so brightness no longer flips back to dim within each minute. - On-demand: a second request no longer overwrites the rotation resume index with the first request's mode. - Render pipeline: reset() drops the prepared group and deferred queue, and a prefetch in flight across a reset discards its result. - Sync: stop() removes the status file (and the controller's cleanup now calls it), standalone removes a stale one at startup, and writes use a unique mkstemp temp file. - render_gate.swap_releases_gil() delegates to frame_timing. - Stale docstrings/comments corrected. feat(vegas): render plugin content off the render thread, and keep it off the GIL when the panel needs it (#630)
DisplayManager.offscreen() gives a thread its own canvas, so Vegas renders every plugin's ticker content on its prefetch thread instead of pausing the scroll for canvas-bound plugins on the render thread. A render gate (src/common/render_gate.py, vegas_scroll.prefetch_gate, on by default with the GIL-releasing binding) lets the prefetch thread run Python only while the render thread waits in SwapOnVSync: on hdpi, frames 2+ refreshes late fell eightfold and late frames overall from 0.90% to 0.60%. See docs/OFFSCREEN_RENDERING.md. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |
